Kaytlin Bailey : A Comedian You Should Know
The ‘Comedian you should know series’ is about celebrating artists on stage. The wonderful, strange, and brilliant performers that light up our theaters, auditoriums, clubs, and sidewalks. A kick-ass, all-female comedy team, has done something interesting, they’ve collaborated with kickstarter to pre-sell tickets to the shows on their tour. Meet Kaytlin Bailey of Cake Comedy, a comedian you should know.
Name: Kaytlin Bailey
Where are you from: Raleigh, NC kinda. I come from a military family so we moved a lot.
Where was your first set, and how did it go?
My first set was at Goodnights Comedy Club during one of their open mics. I asked the club if I could film my set to “submit” to clubs, they justifiably said no. I had some guy film my very first 3 minute set from underneath his table, he got interrupted by a waitress so the 3 minute set is in two disjointed parts. Then I dutifully mailed a DVD of that nonsense to The Improv in D.C. God I hope they threw that away.
Where do you perform regularly?
I perform at NYCC, The Creek and the Cave, The Village Lantern, and a bunch of really cool bar shows in NYC, but I travel all over the country with the CAKE Comedy Tour.
Worst experience on the road?
The CAKE girls and I put a tour together from Ithaca to Toronto in February, like morons. While we were on the road, Snowmageddon happened. So us 4 girls, piled into Erin’s rickety Toyota Corolla and skidded and slid our way from city to city. When we got to the show in Toronto, the bar thought we were performing the following week so there was no promotion & not even Canadians were out in that weather! We did the show for 6 people, including 2 waiters and a bartender. I pictured the headline “4 Airhead Comics Die on Way to Poorly Attended Gig.”
What’s coming up for you?
The CAKE girls and I have teamed up with Kickstarter so we’re putting a tour together from Philadelphia to Charleston in April, it’s really exciting!
What was your first job job?
I worked as a campaign director for a progressive political consulting firm. You know those people that stand on sidewalks and say “do you have minute for the environment?” I was their boss in 12 cities.
Do you have a favorite 1 liner?
My mom and I are taking a break for awhile, we’re having sex with other people.
What’s your favorite joke in your set right now?
I used to do sex work, so I love jokes from that perspective like “Donald Trump reminds me of clients that talk the whole time about how hard their fucking me, with a limp dick.”
Whose a performer you’re embarrassed to like?
Ron White is my guilty pleasure. He’s a funny, smart version of my drunk Uncle.
Funniest thing on TV right now?
The news, if you’re super high and don’t have children.
Your Top 5 Comedians of all time?
Doug Stanhope is my number one favorite comic, closely followed by Bill Burr, Wanda Sykes, Patton Oswalt, I’m a recent convert to Jen Kirkman.
